• Sprint Will be Increasing Price of Unlimited Plan Starting October 16th

U.S. mobile carrier Sprint recently announced that their unlimited text, talk, and data plan will be getting more expensive. They will be raising the price by $10 from $60 a month to $70 a month. It was noted that those who currently pay $60 for Sprintís plan will continue to get the old price but new customers will have to pay $70 a month for the unlimited plan. The carrierís new price increase will go into effect starting October 16th, which is in approximately two weeks.

Currently, Sprint and T-Mobile are the only two carriers left that offer unlimited data but it costs customers $80 per month at T-Mobile instead of $60 per month at Sprint. The company actually encouraged customers to take advantage of the old price by signing up in the next two weeks and to not miss out before the increase in price. According to Sprintís CEO Marcelo Claure,

At Sprint, we give customers what they want Ė and they want the option of unlimited data. At $70 a month, Sprint still beats the competition. Rather than increase the price without warning, we want to give customers one last chance to take advantage of the $60 rate.
In order to qualify for Sprintís plan, customers will have to purchase a device via Sprint Lease, iPhone Forever, Sprint Easy Pay, or bring their own device or pay full price for a new device. The mobile carrier also noted that qualifying customers will be able to lease a 16GB new iPhone 6s and get the unlimited plan for just $61 per month. Soon, this combination will cost customers $10 more at $71 per month.

Mobile carriers Verizon and AT&T are already phasing out unlimited data so we have reason to believe that unlimited data plans will soon disappear and wonít stick around forever. However, for now, if you like having unlimited plans T-Mobile and Sprint are the only ways to go.

Sprint needs to take care of their network issues before raising their prices. Their network is still garbage and this is just a tactic to get suckers to move to sprint and give them the impression of a "good value" by securing them in a price point that others in the future won't be able to get.

As far as unlimited data goes, competitors are getting fierce and data plans are getting cheaper and caps are getting larger. There may never be "unlimited" data again but I think more competitive plans offering a boatload of data at cheaper prices will be coming in 2016. Take Verizon's latest example with their new Small-Extra Large data plans. The war for more subscribers is getting real.

Marketing 101. Tell everybody you'll raise prices on such and such date to get sales before said price increase.
