• Apple Starts Sellng MFi Apple Watch Lugs for Third-Party Apple Watch Band Makers

On Monday, Apple is putting third-party Apple Watch accessory makers one step closer to being able to produce MFi-certified Apple Watch wrist bands by making available Apple Watch lugs that manufacturers can use as the starting point for construction.

These lugs are carefully crafted to match the dimensions of the Apple Watch (38mm or 42mm) so that third-party manufacturers don't have to worry about having an incorrect fit. Manufactures will have to order them through one of Apple's suppliers here and then build around them.

They do appear to only be limited to stainless steel at this point in time, and are not available in the color-matched aluminum colors that Apple offers for the Apple Watch Sport, including gold, rose gold, silver, and space gray. Notably, a pentalobe 1.1 screwdriver is required to disassemble the lugs, and is also available from the distributor for manufacturers that need them.

Manufacturers can expect to pay approximately $10 per lug, and moreover, they are sold in bulk. Once ordered, manufacturers will receive their lugs within about two weeks, after which, manufacturing can begin. Third-party MFi-certified Apple Watch wrist bands may be available before the end of the year or early next year, depending on the company.
