• Walgreens Calls in Prescription of Apple Pay for Rewards Card

Walgreens is getting on board with Apple Pay in a whole new way, according to published reports Wednesday. And the plans in place could manifest very, very soon.

MacRumors is hearing that Walgreens has designs on Apple Pay integration for its Balance Rewards loyalty rewards program. Nothing is official yet, but we're told plans are in place.

With retail giants like Kohl's having already adopted Apple Pay for its own member rewards card, the race is now on among an assortment of retailers all looking to afford their customers the same mobile conveniences as quickly as possible.

MacRumors has heard that the Balance Rewards card in the Wallet app "is now showing up as supporting NFC via Apple Pay." Consequently, it looks like double-clicking the iPhone home button to bring up Apple Pay cards now offers up access to the Balance Rewards pass.

If and when we get official confirmation of Walgreen's plans, we'll update this story. But it's a development that some will be watching closely in the days ahead.
