• UBS: Apple to Sell 78.4M iPhones This Holiday Season

UBS, the investment firm, believes that Apple will end up selling a record 78.4 million iPhones this holiday season. This number would easily top the company’s best-ever quarter from a year ago and continue to eat away at competitor market share if this was to happen. Analyst Steven Milunovich recently issued a note to investors where he gave his outlook on iPhone sales for the near future, expecting Apple to best the $74.5 million iPhones that the company sold in the same period a year ago.

Milunovich went on to predict that Apple will sell another 61 million iPhones into calendar 2016 by the March quarter, which he admitted was a “conservative” forecast. This estimate calls for the iPhone 6s product cycle to post 4% unit growth over the iPhone 6. Though some investors are concerned that the iPhone 6s could result in lackluster demand and a year-over-year decrease in units, this UBS note didn’t seem to share those concerns.

Although the larger smartphone market seems to be flattening out, Milunovich believes that Apple will “gain significant share” in the coming months from its rivals, even if overall iPhone sales don’t continue to grow at the same fast pace seen in the past few years. That being said, one of the more potential wildcard plays here is the rumors of a 4-inch iPhone form factor, which speculation points will be released in mid-2016. The introduction of a new handset in that form factor could potentially help boost overall sales by 10 million units.

The investment firm ended up maintaining its “buy” rating for AAPL shares, though the firm did lowers its price target from $150 to $140.
