• Eddy Cue Hints at a Revamped Remote App for the Apple TV

Apple is looking to work on a new iOS remote app that will fully mimic the functions of the Siri Remote bundled with the fourth-generation Appel TV. The information comes from the company’s senior VP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue. He mentioned in a BuzzFeed News interview that the app should arrive “in the first half of next year,” though he didn’t elaborate on details. A fully function al iteration would imply being able to trigger the Apple TV’s voice commands for search and playback as well.

This past week’s release of tvOS 9.1 enabled support for the existing Remote app. This allows users to swipe around using iOS devices or the Apple Watch and on iOS, giving users the ability to type much faster than using the Siri Remote.

Cue continued by commenting that “a little over half” of Apple TV buyers are upgrading from the third-generation model while most of the rest are completely new to the platform. Apple faces a tougher media player market in 2015 with some strong competition coming from Roku, Google and Amazon. To make matters more difficult, the Apple TV is also the most expensive set-top box out of the bunch, starting at $149.

During the interview, Cue did mention that aside from the core functionality, which he still pegged as streaming, gaming on the device has been “pretty hot” when it comes to the new model. He suggested that similar to the iPhone, the new Apple TV is appealing to casual gamers who might not be prepared to buy something like an Xbox One or PlayStation 4. According to him, the “Apple TV expands the gaming market to those people.”
