The Police in Oregon recently cracked down a crime ring attempting to ship $750,000 worth of iPhones and Apple Gift Cards to Hong Kong in which they sell on the black market. This all started when a man in Tigard, Oregon was at the Apple Store in Washington Square Mall on December 4th purchasing iPhones with a ton of gift cards.
According to the Portland Tribune, the police followed the man to his car after the suspicious activity and found tons of Apple Store shopping bags. In the bags were Apple gift cards worth more than $585,000 and more than 470 iPhones worth $290,000.
After cracking down on the suspect, police were able to find more suspects involved in the crime. They found others involved at a nearby FedEx store where dozens of boxes of iPhones were packed to ship to Hong Kong. The Portland Tribune noted that the purchases were likely made with counterfeit credit cards circulating in Southern California.
Apple products are a big hit worldwide but smuggling and black market selling are big in foreign countries. Just earlier this year, a man attempted to smuggle 94 iPhones into China but was arrested at the Hong Kong border. This was during the time China was not on Apple’s list of first countries to have iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices. The man had taped the iPhones to his body but was stopped by guards when approaching the check point.
