• iPhone 7 Lineup May Gain Waterproof Qualities & Integrated Chassis Antenna

    Apple's next-generation iPhone, presumably the iPhone 7, will reportedly gain some new changes in terms of waterproofing and antenna concealment according to a new report from DigiTimes that cites sources familiar with the matter.

    Catcher Technology, reportedly one of Apple's upcoming suppliers for iPhone casings, is expected to assist in integrating these features into the next-generation iPhone. The iPhone 7 would then be considered water(proof) and not resistant. Currently, Apple has been experimenting with water resistance in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus with special o-ring and gasket seal technology.

    The upcoming new iPhone products are rumored to be water-proof and use new compound materials to hide the antenna, the paper said, adding Catcher's supply is expected to account for 30-35% of the new iPhone's shipments.
    In terms of the antenna concealment, Catcher is reportedly working on a new casing material that would allow the antenna and the casing to merge into one. Whether or not this means removing those not-so-pretty breaks in the case of the iPhone is another thing to be desired.

      I hope this doesn't mean that they will become extremely difficult to fix. Anything put together with adhesive is such a pain to get open, much less put back together.

      Not saying it can't be done, but those 2 screws at the bottom make changing a broken screen a breeze

      Haha! Sorry for your frustration but your description of the camera was good for a chuckle. Yes a flush camera would be nice again. I always have a case so less of an issue. But I am reading comments from many who enjoy a naked 6 series so probably a bit of a nuisance in that case.

      I imagine data is out there but I don't have visibility at present... I am assuming that water damage accounts for a considerable portion of AppleCare claims in order to drive this kind of technology investment designed to waterproof? Certainly a great feature to have but, like most business decisions, there is likely a financial incentive as the primary driving force. Anyone have a link to data on this?

      Maybe innovation is slow over at Apple so they see waterproofing as an easy upgrade?

      A guy at the Apple store told me that water damage is a major cause of their Apple Care Plus repairs. He said men forget them in their pockets, and they end up going through the wash. Women drop them in the toilet.

      I put my first iPhone through the wash the same week I bought it. Thank goodness my son suggested I buy Apple Care Plus, since I wasn't used to carrying a cell phone back then.

      If Apple really does make these things waterproof, I'll forgo buying Apple Care Plus on my next iPhone.

      Have you washed your wallet and car keys? How about your belt, did that go through the wash? Loose change? Perhaps a lighter? Come on.....

      Think about service issues though. The device itself is really dependable. Only thing I could see go for service is water damage (pools, toilet) and cracked screens. If they make it waterproof and shatterproof wouldn't that eliminate the service all together? Seems like a weird business strategy. I don't know

      Yeah, looks like the only way to truly get the iPhone any thinner is to copy the iTouch 2nd, 3rd gen model. They were thin and sleek. They also used adhesive to hold them together. I don't mind a thinner cell phone. Just ensure that it doesn't bend easily :]

      I think the thickness is enough at least. Just work on screen and battery. Everything else is flawless in my opinion.

      I wonder who's treatment application they're going to use?
      Liquipel has been doing this for quite a while now. Maybe we can look forward to some more patent lawsuits.
