The debate as to whether enough "people of color" are on the executive team at Apple has provoked many debates and inspired ample criticism over the years. But now, as 2015 winds to a close, it appears that this discussion will intensify in the year ahead.
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple shareholders may compel Apple to shake up its senior leadership with a greater mindfulness toward diversity. To some, it's a controversial idea. To others, it's an essential move long overdue on the part of the world's most profitable tech company.
"Apple Inc. shareholders could make history next year by deciding whether the company should be forced to increase the number of non-white executives and directors, with a vote on a proposal the iPhone maker has tried to squelch," the report reads, citing a resolution pitched by an investor who wants to see Apple dramatically increase its commitment to diversity.
Although Apple has reportedly frowned on such mandates in the past because they seek to "micromanage recruitment," there's talk that Apple may ultimately include the proposal for consideration at the yet-to-be scheduled 2016 annual shareholder meeting.
