• Yudu Launches New Service to Save Publishers From Apple's 30% Cut

    This one, at least on the surface, has potential legal implications written all over it. On Thursday, a familiar digital technology company by the name of Yudu released what is, for obvious reasons, a highly controversial service aimed at content publishers who sell their subscription materials through Apple and, consequently, have to share in the corresponding riches.

    If you're not well versed in the professional endeavors of Yudu, the company makes online publishing tools available to companies to assist in preparing their content and optimizing it for tablets, mobile phones, and e-reading portals like Amazon's Kindle.

    The new service revealed this morning is designed to enable magazine publishers to avoid having to pay the 30 percent commission that Apple requires in order to deliver content to iDevices via the App Store. Incredibly, Yudu says Apple has recognized the new service as "compliant with its terms and conditions."

    The new dual-subscriptions system from Yudu, whose customers include Reader's Digest and Haymarket, allows users to download publications onto their Apple device through the App Store, even when the purchase is made directly from the publisher.
    The claims by Yudu that Apple is seemingly "okay" with the new service strikes some as peculiar, especially given the extent to which Apple has gone to force compliance with the paid subscription and content distribution policy unveiled in recent months. As many will recall, Apple infamously blocked Sony's electronic-book application for allowing iDevice users to read books purchased through Sony's online store.

    Needless to say, there's an excellent possibility that we haven't heard the last of this story.
