• 10 Billionth Song Just Downloaded from iTunes

    We hit the magic number.

Moments ago, we surpassed the ten billion mark for songs downloaded from iTunes. And unless you've been living under a rock as big as Steve Jobs' ego, the guy or gal to download the ten-billionth song just won a $10,000 iTunes gift card. Of course, I could probably burn through that in a weekend. Still, it's a nice incentive to do a little iTunes shopping, right?

While obviously a promotional gimmick, the "one huge milestone for music" theme does represent a remarkable feat for the iTunes Music Store, now in its seventh year of existence. Still, while it would seem that Apple has made a boatload of cash off of iTunes, Cupertino is always quick on the draw to remind us that the company usually operates at a break-even profit point with regard to iTunes. The real cash, of course, comes from selling Apple hardware.

"iTunes changed the way you buy music, making songs and albums available for download, day or night," Apple said in a release about the milestone. "Seven years later, were about to celebrate our biggest milestone for music, yet 10 billion songs downloaded."

Whether you love the company or hate it, Apple sparked the digital music revolution, an era dominated by both the iPod and iTunes. And it doesn't seem likely that this era is anywhere close to winding down.

If you were the lucky ten-billionth downloader, congrats! ... and please share the exciting details with your pals on ModMyi.
