• Hot Rumor: Refreshed MacBook Airs with Backlit Keyboard, OS X Lion Ahead This Week

The hottest buzz surrounding Apple today is that a slate of refreshed Mac Pros and MacBook Airs with OS X Lion are on tap for release this week. If the rumor mill is accurate, by next weekend we will have four new models to choose from. Two will sport 11-inch screens, and the others beckon us with their 13-inch screens.

Of course, as per modern tradition in the tech blogosphere, one rumor underlying a rumored product refresh isn't enough of a rumor rush to appease some rumor fanatics. So it's only natural that speculation is also swirling about a conspicuously absent feature returning to the MacBook Air.

According to people familiar with the matter, backlit keyboards will join the string of hardware enhancements planned for the new 11.6- and 13.3-inch notebooks, which are also expected to adopt high-speed Thunderbolt ports, an upgrade to Intel's Sandy Bridge architecture, and possibly high-speed 400MBps flash memory.
When Apple pulled the plug on backlit keyboards last year, the company received a verbal spanking by many - so much so that it's believed the lost feature will make a glorious return when the refreshed products turn up in the "very, very near future." Strange but true, it seems the prospective return of backlit keyboards is generating more hype within some circles than the arrival OS X Lion.

So is there a chance that reports of new MacBook Airs this week will once again prove premature? Of course. But it looks increasingly likely that the reason the updated products have been withheld this long is because Apple was waiting to roll out the refreshes until OS X Lion was ready. Well, it's just about ready. Consequently, there's ample incentive to believe that the wait is finally nearing an end for the debut teased above.
