I wish I would have got drafted by Tampa Bay. It didn't happen, I've moved on from football, but I cant help but be envious of the Buccaneer players. The Tamp Bay players have been given iPads instead of the traditional encyclopedia-like playbooks.
The benefits apparently are huge. Managing playbooks is an incredibly annoying task. We've all organized binders for class or work, but the paranoia that surrounds playbooks is ridiculous. From personal experience, the information used for each game is given out at the beginning of the week, and collected before game time, and then destroyed so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. Team playbooks are even more closely guarded. Players who get cut during camp must turn in their playbooks before leaving, and if they don't, teams go to great lengths to recover the "stolen" material for fear of it being sold to other teams.
Having all of this information on an iPad makes the recovery of such information infinitely easier. If a player loses, forgets, or steals his iPad playbook, the information can be remotely wiped preventing the loss of team secrets.
The larger benefits though is the ability of players to easily search for plays, signals, formations, video, and other information they need to study based on keywords. Players no longer need to spend time burning DVDs to watch old game film and flip through countless pages to study their opponents, all of this information is downloaded to the iPad playbooks automatically.
The only downside is that players could possibly forgo studying anything altogether and simply become mindless web video absorbing drones.
