• Smart Cover With a Battery Might Be a Little Smarter

Personally, I've never quite understood what made the "Smart Cover" so smart.

Sure - it uses magnets to attach to the iPad 2, wakes and puts to sleep the iPad automatically, and can be folded a million different ways prop up your iPad 2, but those are more "intuitive" functions as opposed to smart. However, a battery attachment for the iPad 2 Smart Cover from Brando Workshop might be enough to push the cover over the edge into truly smart territory.

The battery pack from Brando is only $38 and Brando claims it extends the life of your iPad 2 by 4 hours. But $38 is cheap for something like this, and you inevitably get what you pay for. The power brick, while the proper shape of a Smart Cover column, looks like a battery glued to the outside of your cover. It's very much an eyesore, but its intentions are noble.

This is why I'm hoping another case manufacturer, or Apple, takes this idea and runs with it. Consider a couple patents Apple has recently been awarded. One patent involves shaping batteries in different ways (not simple rectangles) so they can be more effectively housed within laptops or other devices, and increase battery life by maximizing space within very cramped devices. Next, Apple applied for a wireless charging patent, that specifically mentioned the iMac as a wireless charging hub for all your Apple products and battery driven accessories.

Now imagine an iPad with this wireless charging technology, and smart cover that contains very thin batteries in each column of the smart cover, which is also equipped with wireless charging technology. A cover that cleans, protects, and charges your iPad would be more than a smart cover; it'd be genius.

That would be very slick, but I wonder about durability. The brando battery is a great idea, as a concept, but needs refining. I hope that brando, or more preferably Apple, takes this idea and makes something awesome! ya dig?

Love the idea but how would I charge my iPad or iPad 2 would I have to wait for the iPad 3 of 4??? No wireless charging tech in the iPads yet.

I would really be pleased if the contraption was compatible with the iPad 1.
