• Camera+ Returns from Exile

Camera+ was a popular alternative camera app in its previous incarnations, making the #3 top seller on the App Store at its peak. Apple rejected it multiple times because the devs kept trying to sneak a mod that used the volume button as an alternative camera trigger past the reviewers. Now it's back, deemed acceptable by Apple, and with even more features than before in a slicker package.

In August, developers TapTapTap acknowledged that the so-called "VolumeSnap" feature - allowing the volume control on the earbuds as well as the phone to be used for triggering the camera shutter pictures - had caused Apple to reject the app, as "changing the behavior of iPhone external hardware buttons is a violation of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement." This was the second go-around for TapTapTap, who had seen the app rejected for the same reason before. While they removed the feature from the next update, they hid it as an "easter egg" which was easily activated by users. Once news of the hidden feature made the tech blogs, the app got yanked for a third time.

After a major upgrade, all has been seemingly forgiven and Camera+ is back on the App Store, apparently with the VolumeSnap feature completely removed. There are a host of significant improvements that should bring the app right back up the to the top of the charts. The app is much faster to load and snappier all around. The awkward "retro SLR" skin has been replaced by a clean, intuitive interface, with zoom slider, stabilizer, timer, and burst mode controls easily accessible.

With 53 updated features, Camera+ 2.0 is a strong contender for a native Camera app replacement. It's available for a limited time at the reduced price of $0.99 on the App Store, and is free to people who had bought the previous version of Camera+.
