• Apple Seeking Yet Another Retail Store Design Patent

As MMi reported April 19th, it was recently uncovered that Apple is seeking to shore up its defenses against potential intellectual property infractions in regard to its retail designs. To that end, Apple has sought a patent on the glass cylinder structure that is the signature look of the Apple store in Shanghai China.

As it turns out, however, the Shanghai store isn't alone on Apple's radar for retail structure designs to patent. Apple's flagship store in New York City - the one with the striking curved glass roof - is also on the list.

The patent application was published earlier this week by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and discovered by our friends at Apple Insider. The patent in question is entitled "Support Structure and Building Including Same."

Although patent appetites have been increasing in recent months across the tech industry at large, Apple has much to protect in its hugely popular retail presence. Apple stores, after all, now see an average of 18,000 visitors per store on a weekly basis. The average quarterly revenue at each store is a whopping $12.2 million.
