• Apple Continues Expanding into China with Retail Job Openings in Chengdu and Shenzhen

    New job listings for Apple Retail store leader positions in Shenzhen and Chengdu hint at the company’s plan to expand its retail operations to new cities in China. In 2010 Apple reportedly revealed to its shareholders plans to open a total of 25 stores over the course of two years. Although the company doesn’t appear to be on track, the stores it did open in Beijing and Shanghai quickly rose to become the company’s highest traffic and highest revenue stores as of December 2010.

    The stores have been so popular at times that Apple security officials had trouble controlling the crowds of customers. An example of this would be the disturbance in the overnight line for the release of the iPhone 4S in Beijing resulting in the postponement of the launch in China. Apple has repeatedly indicated that China is a key area of concern for the company as well. Last year alone, Greater China revenues soared to make the region the company’s second-largest market, only behind the U.S. According to CEO Tim Cook, “China will, in the next few years, be a bigger opportunity. We’ve expanded a lot. However, there’s a lot of headroom here in our view.”

    The job listings for a “Store Leader” position are described as “leadership opportunities in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Chengdu.” Five years of experience and a degree are required for the full time positions, making it classified as a “senior” career level position. Both Chengdu and Shenzhen are strategic targets for Apple not only because they are two of China’s largest cities, but also because manufacturing partner Foxconn operates factories in both areas. These new retail stores (particularly the one in Chengdu) would represent Apple’s first foray into the less-developed inland regions of China.

    Opening stores in China seems like it will be a worthwhile move for Apple in the long run. Deutsche bank analyst Christ Whitmore said that the iPhone is “just getting started in China” and that Apple will likely see an explosion of sales when China Mobile begins selling the device in the area. Many other analysts continue to speculate a high number of sales for iOS devices in China after the stores are established and in the case of the iPhone, starts to be officially available from wireless carriers.
