• Apple to Release New Tracking Tool for Developers - Increases User Privacy

In the upcoming weeks, Apple was reportedly planning on detailing a new tracking tool for mobile developers that will better product the privacy of iOS users than the current system. The details were revealed on Friday by The Wall Street Journal.

The new tool will protect user privacy better than “existing approaches” according to the report, which was cited people briefed with Apple’s plans. Apple first announced last year that it would remove developers’ app access to “uniqueIdentifier,” the universally unique serial embedded in each iOS device sold. The UDID works like a networked computer’s MAC address, and is a unique identifier that will remain the same regardless of what app is running. Many companies ended up relying on the UDID to serve ads and collect location and preference data. Consumers have expressed concern that the data could be used to identify individual users.

The details of Apple’s new tracking tool are unclear still. The report cited one person who said that the new identifier is expected to rely on a sequence of numbers not tied to a specific device. News of the new tool comes only days ahead of the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which begins on June 11. There, Apple will unveil iOS 6, the next major upgrade to its mobile operating system that powers their iOS devices as well.

The report also comes in just a few days after ad networks were discovered to be using new tracking methods to bypass iPhone security measures. Advertisers were found using workarounds as Apple has attempted to limit user tracking amid privacy concerns.
