• Apple's MobileMe Service Closed for Good, Data Kept for "Limited Time"

Apple kept to its words on Sunday by closing down the lackluster MobileMe service. The company did give users the option to move their accounts to iCloud or download photos and files for a “limited time.”

For those of you who noticed, going to Apple’s MobileMe.com website leaves you with a sign stating “MobileMe is closed.” The page now just contains links for migrating an account to iCloud, downloading photos from Gallery, and downloading files from iDisk. The service shut down was inevitable after Apple announced its replacement iCloud service last June. It sent a reminder to users early last month informing users of the impending shutdown.

The Cupertino California company has been trying to entice remaining customers to move to iCloud by giving them free extended storage upgrades and even given out free copies of OS X Snow Leopard to some users. In May, the company published a FAQ letting customers know that if they had already purchased 20GB of storage from MobileMe they would receive the same amount of storage in iCloud until September 30, 2012. OS X Lion users have reportedly been offered free copies of Snow Leopard so they can install the Mac App Store and upgrade to Lion, which is required for some of iCloud’s features.

Apple has shown its commitment to iCloud last month at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. The company announced that iCloud will allow Notes and Reminders syncing later this year as well as have better integration with OS X Mountain Lion.
