As always, Samsung is right on top of advertising their devices as the company recently unveiled its new ad, “It doesn't take a genius,” referring to the Samsung Galaxy S III being a better handset than Apple’s new iPhone 5. According to the advertisement, “The next big thing is already here.” This ad will begin to run in national and regional newspapers start tomorrow and it performs a side-by-side comparison of the two smartphones, with the Galaxy S III seeming to be superior.
One must admit that the S III might look better on paper with some of its specs being laid out: its larger screen, the better battery life, more RAM, and a longer list of features. It should be pointed out though that some of the features Samsung listed under the Galaxy S III do seem a bit padded. These include “Turn Over to Mute,” “Tilt to Zoom,” and “Shake to Update.” The argument is a bit silly as Apple products have never really been about the best technical specifications. The Cupertino California company prides itself in the combined strength of its hardware, its reliable software, and the mentality that “it just works.”
What this ad does tell everyone though is Samsung’s point of view regarding Apple. The South Korean electronics giant seems to view the iPhone as the market leader as it continues to bash Apple and its products in its advertisements. If you keep bringing up the competitor in your own advertisements, how good does it make you seem? Some food for thought!
We’ll find out if the strategy pays off for Samsung as it is currently hard to imagine the results. It’ll definitely give some consumers a few laughs here and there but what matters for the tech giants is the money and if the advertisements are giving consumers the right calls-to-action.
