The US Patent and Trademark Office may have just thrown a wrench into Apple's recent courtroom triumph over Samsung by invalidating one of the patents at the heart of the victory: rubber-banding. We noted at the time that Apple hit a "home run" with that particular IP, as jurors declared that all 21 disputed Samsung devices infringed it, no doubt resulting in a large part of the $1 billion (and counting) owed by the Korean maker. "Claim 19" of patent 7469381, which covers that feature, was invalidated by the USPTO on two counts, both of which were cases of prior art that allegedly existed before Cupertino claimed them. Either one could be enough reason to throw out that part of the patent, according to FOSS Patents, provided that the USPTO's ruling stands up. Either way, Samsung has already brought the new information to Judge Koh's attention -- which might bring about some new action very soon.



Looks like the USPTO may have finally gotten some common sense. Maybe we will start seeing a little better review of patent applications of this type.

How hard will it really be for apple to just buy out another company that develops LCD, after all there line of products is so big they wold probably benefit more with another company than Samsung.

It's more than "just buying out". You would want someone who can produce an equivalent or superior screen. From reports on the desktops, they haven't found a better yet. Their alternative screen suppliers deliver an inferior product.

well I'm with and without you because other companies can reproduce the same results however they aren't very good at producing fast and reliable quality screens.

I love this article because people think apple relies on Samsung or that Samsung has the power to let apple go.. Well it's the contrary Samsung needs apple a lot more, sure they both need eachother somewhat but apple is one of their biggest clients. Just think how many displays Samsung makes 1 for every iPhone iPod and iPad. That's billions

I wonder the same. Many large companies outsource components of the final product. Once article stated that Apple designed the A6 chip and another company was just producing it(design was all Apple) Maybe Apple wants to concentrate on what its good at..making BILLIONS.

2 things I gather from this.

1) Samsung is smarter than its customer base, or atleast the ones that actually believe that business should be personal and spiteful when there are billions on the line lol

2) The facts still remains that the Samsung's supply to Apple is decreasing. Which in the spirit of competition is a good thing. More companies getting screen contacts breeds better competition and hopefully a higher standard for smartphones, tablets etc across the board.
