Apple's appetite for companies has only grown stronger in the waning weeks and days of 2012. That much is evident in a new report from The Wall Street Journal, which asserts that the Cupertino, California-based tech juggernaut could be making a power play for R2 Studios.
If you're not familiar, RS Studios specializes in the development of home-media and automation technology. The WSJ is hearing from sources that Microsoft and Google are also among the companies similarly exploring an acquisition of the firm.
So what exactly is Apple interested in over at R2 Studios? Based on the chatter we're hearing, the company presently controls patents related to "electronic devices and interfaces." When you couple this reality with the fact that Apple is allegedly on the verge of entering consumers' living rooms to a new degree next year with a connected HDTV, the potential acquisition starts to make more sense in theory.
For now, Google, Apple, and Microsoft won't comment on the speculation. But talks are said to be ongoing and serious.
