• Apple Is #3 Portable Computer Maker (If You Count iPad)

Apple would be the third-largest portable computer maker in the world if an iPad is put in the same category as netbooks and laptops. That's what Deutschebank's Chris Whitmore found when he ran the numbers for the past quarter, according to a story on Fortune magazine's website. The iPad - which, let's remember, has only been available since April - propelled Apple past industry giants like Toshiba and Lenovo. Only HP and Acer sold more.

In the note to his clients, Whitmore looked at the IDC global portable computing market share survey for the quarter that ended in June. According to that report, Apple was #7, with 2.47 million MacBooks and MacBook Pros sold. He added the 3.27 million iPads that have been sold since launch, and Apple's share went to #3. ”When including the iPad as part of the NB [notebook] market, Apple leapt over Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba and Dell in terms of global unit share,” he wrote. What's more, the sales did not come at the expense of the MacBook; in other words the feared "cannibalization" of Apple's product line did not occur. "Apple’s traditional MacBook business posted accelerated unit growth on a [year-to-year] basis in [the second quarter of the year] despite the launch of the iPad,“ Whitmore wrote. The cannibal went after other manufacturers' notebooks instead: Whitmore found that "the iPad is directly cannibalizing demand for other vendors’ [notebook] products."

Classifying the iPad as a computer could make sense. It - potentially - does everything a computer can do. The one thing it can't do, of course, is let you run the apps of your choice on it, not without a jailbreak. So let's add that to the pile of reasons why Apple should open up iOS: they could probably own the netbook market within a year.
