• Riot Games: League of Legends Mac Client Will Be Ready Within a Month

If you were one of the many who signed the Change.org petition to get a Mac port of the popular multiplayer online battle arena game (MOBA), League of Legends, then this past week has been chock full of good news for you. Riot Games’ PR manager, Chris Heintz, after speaking with Mike Schramm of TUAW, revealed that Riot Games is indeed working on a Mac client and it will likely be available within the month.

According to Chris Heintz, the Mac client of the game is already live on internal beta servers and should be ready for users to play as an Open Beta within a month. Many players have been wondering what took the developer so long to get it up and running and Heintz was able to provide some background information to clear things up.

Originally when the company tried to develop a Mac client, it was to be developed with a partner and was effectively a port. Based on the company’s service model and how rapidly the company issues patches, the concept overall wasn’t really compatible with the approach the developer was looking to take. To top it all off, due to performance and stability issues on top of the approach, the developer decided to kill the idea. This new version which the company is hoping to release soon is developed by Riot Games itself, running on OS X natively and without any need for emulation. Heintz said that “we knew it was going to take some time, but we wanted to do it right.”

Being someone who owns a Mac and got sucked into the game, a Mac client that runs natively is welcomed and something I’m looking forward to very much.
