I restored my locked but jailbroken phone to 1.0.2, then upgraded to 1.1.1, everything went fine . I then tried jailbreakme.com, everything worked fine but after installing some apps I am getting a message that says "Warning you are running out of disc space . Please delete some photos or videos."
according to itunes the phone is only half full.

under /var/root there is Library and media directories and under private/var/root there are Library and media directories, normal ?

figured I would do standard disc space check and it shows:

    # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s1 300M 288M 9.7M 97% /
    devfs 18K 18K 0 100% /dev
    /dev/disk0s2 7.3G 2.6G 4.7G 36% /private/var

I installed all the same apps that I had under 1.0.2 and the old installer use to show that there was 100mb free space.
any ideas on whats going on ?

    thanks found thread

ok did the procedure it seemed to have helped a little but the numbers don't seem to have changed that much:

    # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s1 300M 263M 35M 89% /
    devfs 18K 18K 0 100% /dev
    /dev/disk0s2 7.3G 2.7G 4.7G 37% /private/var
    #

however upon further investigation I found the size of ROOT_Applications

    # df -h ROOT_Applications
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s2 7.3G 2.7G 4.7G 37% /private/var

So I guess what i need is a guide to the iPhone file system to understand how much space is alllocated to what (system vs user).

so it looks like the procedure I just did moved the applications dir so that I have all available space on the iphone for installings apps ?

thanks for pointing me to the procedure hopefully it did what I think it did.

what you did was moved the apps to where the media is stored

Your numbers will stay the same but your apps now take space from the 7.3gb or so for the media insted of the 300 mb for the os

And when you upgraded and lost the space is becuse 1.1.1 is alot bigger (100mb or so) then 1.0.2

I'm having the same problem with disc space, but unfortunately the link in this thread to the procedure for fixing it no longer works. Could someone please repost the instructions for fixing the problem?

I'd like to see the link to the thread also...I have posted today this: "Hi, I upgraded my iPhone to 1.1.1 using AppSnapp and everything is working great, except that I cannot see my songs. Initially my iphone showed only 300MB memory. I then used Term-vt100 to enter these two commands: (1) rm /var/root/Media, and (2) mv /var/root/Mediaold /var/root/Media. Its now showing the correct memory (8GB), but I still cannot see any songs or videos (thats about 5GB of "invisible" songs and videos)...any hints what to do, cheers. p.s. I don't mind deleting all my songs and videos, if thats the only solution, but don't know how to do it or how to locate the Media folder (have little knowledge of vt100 command language - any hints where to et the complete list of commands)."

Can someone help me to get out of this mess..cheers

...tried restoring the iphone, but it still shows only around 3GB free memory, and can't see any songs/photos/videos - how can I erase the 5GB of "invisible" memory. Cheers.

Tried something else - restoring the iphone, but it still shows only around 3GB free memory, and can't see any songs/photos/videos - how can I erase the 5GB of "invisible" (used) memory. Cheers.

got message "mv: cannot stat 'Mediaold': No such file or directory"...think somethings messed up, any idea how can I reestablish the Media files erase the 5GB or erase all data (except system files), txs.

sorry, forgot to mention I didn't go to JAILBREAKME.COM now, because I already did that yesterday after which I got the 300MB problem...should I try jailbreaking again (and activating with AnySim) and then try the solution in your link?

    OK,

I have what seems to be a really strange variation on the 300MB 1.1.1 upgrade problem.

I used the virginizer script in the guide to virginize my 1.0.2 phone then upgraded to 1.1.1 and used jailbreakme and anysim.

I'm out of space. When I ssh to my phone the i see this:

    # pwd
    /var/root
    # ls -al
    total 764
    drwxrwxrwx 5 root wheel 340 Nov 10 09:16 .
    drwxr-xr-x 16 root wheel 612 Nov 10 09:39 ..
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6148 Nov 3 22:29 .DS_Store
    drwxr-xr-x 6 root wheel 306 Nov 10 09:04 .svn
    drwxrwxrwx 23 root wheel 850 Nov 10 16:15 Library
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 1 Nov 10 08:55 Media -> /
    drwxr-x--- 4 root wheel 170 Nov 10 08:55 Media.iNdependence
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 920 Sep 18 21:41 UnknownCarrier.plist
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 752965 Nov 10 09:04 root.zip
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 9021 Nov 10 09:04 youtube.zip

    # df -a
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s1 307200 289692 14436 96% /
    devfs 18 18 0 100% /dev
    /dev/disk0s2 3657400 477760 3179640 14% /private/var
I dont think the Media symlink makes any sense and I clearly don't want to remove my root directory.

    Any advice?

Renamed Media.Independence to Media, now its golden!

I had the same problem, as u might have guessed from my numerous posts, and have solved it only today...the best solution is this:-
1 restore Iphone (use shift-restore to point to 1.1.1 restore file)
    2 jailbreak, activate
3 uninstall Itunes and all Apple software
4 reinstall iTunes (don't use latest version + disable auto updating)
5 connect iPhone as NEW phone

U can play around with command language, but the above is easier and faster...if problem persists I guess re-virginizing wasn't done properly
