I have read most of the thread, but I am still a bit confused a couple things.
    1. I know this will update the 3G baseband, but I have a 2g, will this update its baseband if I try to jailbreak?
    2. I am unlocked on T-Mobile now and can't afford to lose that, so if my unlock does not retain after attempting this, I should just be able to downgrade back?
Since incorrect information was given out earlier in reply to your question, I feel the need to correct it.

2G baseband has not been updated since 2.0. I bet Apple never updates it. Why spend your time upgrading a model you don't sell anymore? The 2G has remained at 04.05.04_G since July of '08.

Jailbreaking doesn't affect your baseband, updating to new firmware does.

My T-Mobile SIM works fine on 3.0 Beta 2 on a 2G iPhone. Your unlock remains.

I got 3.0 Beta 2 installed using a Mac via Bootcamp. I used iUtilities to bypass the whole need a Dev thing.

Thank you Stealth for all the work you've done here!

You can install Cydia through Icy, but it does not work and will not work until Saurik updates it.
