I've searched for 30 mins so don't start.

I've read "update to 3.1.2 via iTunes." Is that only for a virgin iPhone? If I'm jailbroken on 3.0 can I run blackra1n and be upgraded?

I'd rather not re-install all my apps, jailbroken and otherwise, not to mention many custom winterboard themes that took hours to perfect.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Anytime you go from one firmware to another firmware you always have to restore your iPhone which erases everything then you have to jailbreak again and re-install all your apps.

If you're working and happy on 3.0 then there is absolutely no reason to upgrade to 3.1.2. The ONLY added feature is voice activation over bluetooth. I for one am on 3.0 and staying there until I HAVE to upgrade for some ridiculously awesome feature... which is not in the foreseeable future.

    Blackra1n is for 3.1/3.1.2

    redsn0w is for 3.0/3.0.1

Why would you want to run blackra1n on an already jailbroken phone anyway?

Not exactly true. If you don't rely on an unlock, you can upgrade to stock without losing anything but your jailbreak, which is easy enough to get back now. If you have PkgBackup, it takes all of a few minutes to redownload all your jailbreak apps, and if you keep your custom themes organized in folders with the right structure, it takes all of a few seconds to re-upload them after the jailbreak and reinstall of Winterboard.

What you can do is backup all your themes and upgrade, and there you go you still have them and its good to be up to date, so your iphone can be running better

    That's the ONLY new feature?

    That sounds pretty lame.

I am running 3.0 jailbroken and am happy with it. I thought they would have more features in 3.1.2.

    Thanks for the help!!!

    3.1.2 is a bugfix for 3.1

3.1 had more than one new feature, but really, nothing all that compelling for an upgrade as far as i'm concerned. I just went to 3.1.2 to be up to date. I just wish AppBackup would get compatibility with 3.1.2

I see. That makes sense I guess. I just don't want to be too far behind but since I seem to be doing just fine with 3.0 and mms I'll leave well enough alone.

    Thanks again!

Haha, thank goodness I read up before I posted. I had this same question. Being a virgin iPhone owner (on a 3Gs), I want to make sure I keep up to date with firmware updates, but I also want to make sure I keep everything I have downloaded via cydia. Considering nothing big coming from these firmware updates, I'll stay with what I got. :P

    Thanks!
