Alright, awhile back I did a jailbreak on my iPod Touch 2G 3.1.2 and I haven't really been paying attention to the Apple scene since then. Now a friend or two wants me to jailbreak their iPods...which might be 2G or 3G...I'm not sure right now, except they both went to 3.1.3. I've been reading around that you can't go back with certain iPods/iPhones at 3.1.3 or something like. If it were my own iPod I would just go ahead and try to jailbreak it, but since they're both not my iPods I need to know if an iPod 2G or 3G at 3.1.3 can be downgraded to 3.1.2 and jailbroken safely.

    Model Number:

    MB: 2nd Gen
    MC: 3rd Gen

if ANY 2nd gen: jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.4, use 3.1.2 IPSW

    IPSW Download: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware

(you might have to downgrade to 3.1.2, jailbreak with blackra1n, restore to 3.1.3, then use redsn0w. I had to do this once, so you might want to do it, just to be safe although I don't always have to do it. Make sure they're backed up - you need to restore twice if you do this!)

Downgrade: put iPod in restore mode (turn off, hold down home button, release when you get iTunes logo) Shift-restore to downloaded IPSW.

3rd gen 8 gb: MUST downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak with blackra1n. Use 2nd gen firmware - will be teathered.

Bigger 3rd gen devices: you're screwed

For 3rd gen devices, I would recommend waiting (like I am) for the unteathered jailbreak promised by the end of the month for ALL Devices

    Hope this helps.

So 2nd gen I can just downgrade using the shift click method, selecting 3.1.2 firmware and then jailbreaking with blackra1n? And if its 3rd gen it has to be tethered?

    *Edit*
I've never used redsn0w. When 3.1.2 came out along with blackra1n I just upgraded and used blackra1n. That was it. Now I'm back trying to help some friends jailbreak their iPods who went to 3.1.3 with either 2G or 3G iPods.

Yep, that's right. If your not comfortable with using redsn0w, you can stay with 3.1.2 and fake it to 3.1.3 so you can run updated AppStore apps by installing the package in the BigBoss repo called Firmware 3.1.3.

    What does redsn0w do?

Is the 3G only 32gb and 64gb because I think they both have 8gb iPod Touches and that would easily determine what generation they both have...lol.

That's what the MB-MC model numbers are for. You can find this in Settings - General - About. The 8-32-64 gb has nothing to do with it in relation to your problem. If it's an MC serial number, you must downgrade and use blackra1n. If it's an MB serial number, you must also downgrade then jailbreak with blackra1n. However, you can then restore to 3.1.3 and use redsn0w 0.9.4, a jailbreak program for 3.1.3 that must be used after a 3.1.2 jailbreak. This is not necessary. However, if you don't use redsn0w, you must use Firmware 3.1.3 that you can install from Cydia so they can use all their apps.

Oh...the wiki for ipods listed 8gb only under 2nd gen is why I asked.
