I've had a total of three jailbroken iPhones (8gb 2G, 8gb 3G, and 16GB 3G) and ALL of them have had the same problem. They all ran VERY slow and lagged a lot. Everything is choppy (especially swiping through the app pages), there a is a huge delay in my typing (I'll type like 10 letters and only 3 will have appeared by then), my games run VERY VERY slowly (try playing Sonic the Hedgehog on a lagged iPhone) and it takes like 15 seconds to open the messages app. It also takes like 2 or 3 minutes for Cydia to finish loading. My battery is also HORRIBLE. It'll die after like four hours of use, and if I listen to a few songs, I'll find myself with 75% of the battery left afterwards.

What am I doing wrong? I look at people on YouTube who are showing their jailbroken iPhoens, and they are running VERY smoothly. Their Cydia also takes like no more than 10 seconds to load, while mine takes 20x that...I'm pretty sure their batteries aren't anywhere near as bad as mine either. I had this problem way before I downloaded Winterboard, so that's definitely not the main problem. Is it my firmware? I'm running on 3.0.1 still. What could it possibly be? What am I doing wrong? I never see this happen to anyone else's jailbroken iPhones but mine!

Sorry to bump but I really need help!

since none of them are 3gs then you can update all to 3.1.2 and jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.2 and see if that corrects the problem for you...if unlocking is a concern then on the 2 3g phones use a custom firmware created with pwnagetool and use shift+restore (pc) or option+restore (mac) to preserve the 04.28.xxx baseband (or is it 04.26.xxx) and use ultrasnow to unlock them

I'm confused...The one I use right now is both jailbroken and unlocked because I use T-Mobile. So what do I do (I'm horrible at this, so I need tiny baby steps)? I'm also using Windows, so I can't use Pwnage Tool.

Of course not. They were fresh out of the box.

That's the thing. I don't know EXACTLY how to do it. Well I know most of it, but I keep hearing all of this stuff about losing my jailbreak and unlock if I do it incorrectly, so I want baby steps telling me exactly how to do it before I do anything, or else I refuse because I can't afford to mess up. If you could give me the steps, that would be awesome. I'm using a jailbroken 16GB iPhone 3G on the 3.0.1 firmware. Its also unlocked because I use T-Mobile.

Usually if you restore it will take you to the latest version which is 3.1.3 with no jailbreak....
    And they stopped signing 3.1.2...
Thats a problem.... maybe your options is either to wait till OS X 4.0 comes out or restore to 3.1.3.... Cuz Im not sure if you can upgrade to 3.1.2

I ended up figuring it out after Google searching for a while. The upgrade made it MUUUUUCH faster! But I'm scared to add Five Column Springboard and Backgrounder because I'm afraid they'll slow it down again. Will they?

Alright, I suppose I can live without Backgrounder. I hope there's a more stable release someday. Thanks a lot!
