^^ what he said. The phone has to be jailbroken before it will accept a custom firmware.

Yeh I find snowbreeze useless too. Try using PwnageTool on a MAC, if you dont have a mac download a pre-cooked ipsw. (CrispyTech have some). you can also try to restore in both DFU or restore mode to possible circumvent to error.

When restoring to the CFW, don't put the phone in DFU or recovery mode. Just have it fully booted and sitting on the springboard (homescreen).

You're getting the 1600 error because you're trying to do the custom restore while in DFU Mode. This type of restore needs to be done while in Recovery Mode.

Lots of people get confused between the two. DFU Mode = blacked out screen. Recovery Mode = iTunes & USB cable shown on screen. In either mode, when you connect the phone to your computer, iTunes states that it has detected a phone in "recovery mode" and needs to be restored (so iTunes does not differentiate between Recovery and DFU Mode - which is probably what confuses most people).

Do the restore in Recovery Mode and it'll work fine.

Edit: my instructions assume that you have a 3gs. If you have a 3g non-S, then dhamien's answer is the correct one.
