ok so i'm sorry to ask, but i need to do this tonight if possible cause if it don't work i'm gunna return my ip4...anyways i have the ip4 with 4.0, i've been having alot of issues and i'd like to try and restore it back to factory...now i don't wanna update to 4.0.1 Unless it will be safe for the upcoming jb....so now can i just download any copy of 4.0 off the net to use with the ip4? and i had a 3g before so i never dealt with sh blobs before...i did save this phone 4.0 blobs, but what do i need to do with them? like i said if i can just restore to 4.0.1 and be safe for the upcoming jb then i'll just do that...thanks again....

Click Start – search for “Notepad“, right-click and select “Run as Administrator“.

    Have notepad open C: \Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Put 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com on the last line then hit enter then save.

You may need to reboot not fully sure, I use OSX. But then download 4.0 and then shift-click restore in itunes and select 4.0 that you downloaded.

So that host folder holds my shsh blobs I saved off tiny umbrella?

I just checked the ect folder but there is nothing in it. No host folder. It's just empty.

forget it i found the host file...

now i have two files...host and host.umbrella....is it just the host one i add that line right?

Yes add it to just the normal hosts file. This redirects your firmware signing to trick itunes into letting you install the firmware.

Here is an article Saurik made on it.

Gotcha. So I'm guessing with every firmware from this point on after I save the blobs I do the exact same thing before a restore. Thanks again

That is if you want to go down a step in the firmware. Like from 4.0.1 to 4.0.

ugh i did what you said, but i'm getting the itunes error about the firmware...does it matter what 4.0 firmware i use with the ip4? or does the same one i have for my 3g work with the ip4...or does that mean that my shsh aren't on file at cydia like they are supposed to be...i saved them as well on my harddrive....could it be i have to put the phone in DFU mode? maybe i'm doing something wrong here? this is what my host file looks like:

    # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
    # ::1 localhost
    # 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com
    # 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Take the # off the last line and save.

And each iPhone has a different firmware. So download the iPhone 4 4.0 firmware.

ok thanks i was looking all over for a 4.0 that was for the ip4...lol that's what i think i needed...

ok scratch that the firmware worked, but i keep getting the error that itunes could not contact the servers at this time...so i'm guessing something is not working....ugh i think i'm gunna give up for the night...

Ok seriously I can't get it to work. Is it safe to just update to 4.0.1 for the future jb?
