Does it say anything like "the device is not eligible for the requested build"? Try restarting your computer, recovery mode, a different usb port or even doing the restore on a different computer.

Setup as a new phone is usually best, but you'll lose text messages, pics, etc... You can choose the restore from backup though.

I hope a jailbreak for 4.02 isnt too far away. I was going to update from 3.1.3 to 4.01 but only had the option to update to the new IOS 4.02. I would like to update but only if I can jailbreak my 3GS without too much trouble.

You can still upgrade to 4.0.1 the way I described on the previous page.

I am also having a lot of trouble trying to jailbreak my phone. I accidently upgraded to the 4.02, and I have the restore 4.08a293 but when I click on it it says that the folder is empty, and won't let me try and update it in itunes. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Re-download the file with Firefox. It's not supposed to be a folder or a .zip file, it's supposed to be an .ipsw file. Also, download 4.0.1 as 4.0 isn't being signed anymore.

Ok, I'm now in the process of redownloading 4.0.1 using firefox. Bear with me, lol I'm not very good at this kind of stuff, so I really need the stupified directions on this process

So it downloaded from mozilla and it still doesn't let me open it. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

Hold the shift key while hitting restore in iTunes. Then browse to and select the fw you downloaded. iTunes should then begin the restore process.

You're not supposed to open the file, it just needs to be there and be named iPhonex,x-blahblah.IPSW - when it's there in that format, you can find it with iTunes. Put it on your desktop so it's easy to find.

Yeah put it on the desktop and then make sure it looks like a Lego block with an musical note and iPod on it. If it does, that's what you're looking for when you restore. It it shows up as a file/folder, that's not gonna work.
