    Ok so the message has changed now. When I start the restore, it says extracting software. Gets to the end and says restore cannot be done at this time due to a connection with the apple server

    Ok Simon. So I've downloaded the update. Clucked restore. Then extracting software comes up, once that reaches the end of the status bar the message us ;

    The iPhone cannot be restored at this time because the iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temp unavailable. ?

    Something is wrong with your hosts file. Try another computer.

    Ok I will try that. If that's a no go what's the next step?

    Are there errors that can't be fixed or is it just a case of finding the problem? I appreciate your help mate. Really I do

    There is pretty much always a solution. Barring hardware issues.

    Use a custom firmware.
    Gives me error 1600. Or 21 if I use TinyUmbrella.
    I managed to downgrade to 4.3.3 using another tutorial, but it seems my baseband didn't change, because my phone is still not activated. I don't have the original SIM.

    Can you think of anything else?

    Thanks a lot for the help.

    You need to enter pwned DFU before restoring to a custom firmware.
