Use tiny umbrella to kick out of recovery and grab the correst shsh file and do the restore, if you can.

ok if i kick it out.. tiny will not recognize the iphone at all... it will only recognize it when its in recovery mode or else iphone will NOT book up...

You definitely have to uninstall the wifi sync on your pc, i have the same problem too. After i uninstall , everything goes smoothly.

ok when i do that tiny will not recognize the phone at all... and it will not boot.. it will just get stuck at the apple logo plus two lines that look like a dead pixel.. but i did it anyhow for this guide purpose
Ok, give me a second, i will put my iphone in DFU mode and see

DFU mode does allow it to recognize but go to display shsh and copy down your ECID and key in manually, it will grab the 4.0.1 shsh blogs.

Great, can you let us know, whether you are running the tiny server or you have edited the hosts file. So Wifi sync is the culprit, haha

Can you also let us know how your hosts file content looks like.

so have you tried to restore back to 4.0.1 if thats what u want to restore to?

so we are on the same page tiny does not do the restore.

    I ran tiny server.
    here is my host file:

    # Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.

    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

I started tiny with admin privileges.
did a computer restart, my firewall was blocking tiny.

    Started tiny server.

    opened itunes.

shift click on restore, then did the check.

    choose my ipsw file.

    watched the progress bar .

So basically, you key in your ECID and retrieve you shsh blogs onto the pc, and then add only this line to the hosts file

    127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com

run tiny server again and do the restore.

Yes thats what i am trying to do by ECID and nothing is happing all it says

08/31/2010 01:35:28.458 Sorry - You must connect iPhone4 to obtain SHSH...

Looks like i am screwed... unless you can pull a miracle

I simulated the problem, put my iphone in DFU mode, then run tiny, it says connect to iphone, so I click display shsh and copy the ECID onto the blank column and click save shsh and retrieve, and it did.

You have to get you shsh blogs, that is your fist step.

You can save your shsh even if you are in recovery mode, all you need is to key in your ECID manually and the grey out " save shsh " becomes active. Do you know your ECID of your iphone 4?

i just read some there that you cant do it tru advance tab while in duf mode on Iphone 4... You have the 3g or 3gs and it can be done on that with ECID but not the iphone4
