I updated to the new 4.1 software for my 3G iphone.
I then used redsnow to jailbreak and it worked fine.

The problem came when I went to run Cydia and it errored and never finished the re-organization.

Now the phone won't turn off or reboot.

    Cydia error is
    "http error signal 5"

    Itunes 10 restore error was
    "Unknown error (1602)"

Any ideas on how to downgrade or restore?

Same thing happened to me, what i did was plug it in then hard reboot it (by holding power and home button until screen goes off) but AS SOON as the screen goes off let go of the buttons so that it stays blank.

Then put it in DFU mode and restore to 4.1

This worked for me hopefully it works for you

This fix worked for me too!
Don't try with Cydia off either, it still locks up.
    Wait for a new jailbreak

just curious. when you jb on 4.1, did you have your phone icon?

No, the phone icon wasn't there on mine either. Weird, also the Cydia icon didn't have anything on the icon for the homescreen it was just blank. I think IOS 4.1 broke the redsn0w jailbreak so we have to wait for another jailbreak method .

that's what seems to be happening to everyone. all the reading that i've done says that we're idiots for upgrading. lol. i didn't want to... cydia made me do it. i was forced to restore my phone yesterday, and itunes automatically upgraded to 4.1. now i' stuck playing the waiting game until a new hack is released. i will say that i'm very pleased with the speed of my phone now though. it's quite a lot faster than it was before.

4.1 didn't "break" the redsn0w jailbreak. Redsn0w just has to be updated to support 4.1. The reason it was fine for jailbreaking 4.0/4.0.1/4.0.2 is because those three firmware were essentially all the same, very little changed. 4.1 brought more changes to the firmware so just like any other piece of software after a OS upgrade it just needs to be updated. Shouldn't take too long for the dev team to do it.

You can always just downgrade back to 4.0.2. It isn't hard to do on a 3G.

i never did save my shsh's thought. i have read that if i have an older model of the 3g, that there still may be a chance.

You don't need SHSH on a 3G like you would on a 3GS. You should just be able to put it in dfu then shift click restore to 4.0.2. You will get an error at the end, you just use something like tiny umbrella to kick it out of recovery once it gets to that part.

You can restore or downgrade a 3G to any 3.xx firmware without shsh blogs, but to restore or downgrade to 4.xx on a 3G, you still need shsh blogs to do so.

You can downgrade to 3.1.2/3.1.3 then restore to 4.0.2 can't you?

Any firmware = or > 4.xx , you still need shsh blogs to restore if apple is not signing that OS.

i've done a little reading, but i'm still not sure if i understand this tiny umbrella thing. i did the shift+restore, and it went well, till the end. i got an error of 3194 or something like that. but i was trying to restore to 4.0... that may have been a mistake. the phone is fine though, but still on 4.1. so do i need to download 3.1.x, and try again? is there a walk through on how exactly to use tiny umbrella? i'm sorry for the questions. i don't want to come off like a total idiot here, but i've just never had to deal with downgrading before.
