when you are sing a custom 4.1 firmware, do you need to be in DFU more or recovery mode, or just plain hold shift and restore and do it like that??? just need an answer to that and i will be perfectly fine

Some say DFU but I seem to get an error when I do that so I just do it normally(shift-restore) and get no errors.

I've always done it right from normal operating mode. If you run into problems doing it that way just put it in dfu and try again.

That is the error I get in DFU mode. So just got the normal route and use shift-click while in normal mode.

Old post but may still be relevant.

In my experience, every single time I restore any iphone to a custom firmware on my mac I have to go in to "user(your user name)/library/itunes/devicesupport/ then delete every file in the folder. Then open (custom build program) and create a new custom firmware.. follow the instructions to put the phone in DFU and finally restore to the newly built firmware file.

I just installed a custom 4.1 on my 3GS with no errors at all. Did it from normal mode, just shift+click restore.
