My wife has had her ipod touch for a long time. It's a first generation running version 2.2.1

It's never been jailbroken before but I have jailbroken my Iphone several times so I have some experience.

I'm not opposed to upgrading to a newer version of iOS but I've heard that some versions slow down the older models like this.

What version of iOS should I upgrade to (assuming that I'm given a choice). Since it's never been jailbroken before will Itunes force me to version 4.1?

You can hit restore in Itunes to take you to 3.1.3 and jailbreak with Redsn0w 0.9.4 but point to 3.1.2 when you are ask to browse.

This is the last version that you have to update, there is no more update on the firmware.

That is probably the best way to go about it. You will get new features other than multitasking and still be running on a good solid firmware that wont slow you down

okay, every time hit the update button i get the message,

"this version of the Ipod software (2.2.1) is the current version.

Any idea why this is not updating correctly?

Have you updated your itunes yet ? Hit restore in Itunes.

You must be connected to internet.

I remember at some point to update from 2.2.1 to 3.1.3, you need to pay.
Go download the ipod touch 1st gen 3.1.3 from the net and then press shift + Restore and a box will open up for you to browse to the firmware you downloaded.

I'm using Itunes 10 and connected to the internet. Tried on 2 different computers too.

I think that I did edit some file a few months ago that allowed me to update my jailbroken iphone with Cydia and bypass the apple system. Could that be causing this problem?

Read my earlier post, i edited it. You have to google and find the firmware ipod touch 1st generation 3.1.3 ipsw

If I can recall, Apple charges $10 for update to 3.xx for 1st gen ipod touch with addition of maps , emails and so forth.
