yes it wipes clean, before you begin you should back up your device, and also sync your contacts, notes, pictures etc. to your Mac, i don't remember what its name but in window its outlook, and contacts. proceed to create the cfw select expert mode deselect hacktivate if you have the orginal sim card, other wise select hacktivate, and you know the rest..... and no you do not need redsnow, use one or the other. some people have problem pwnagetool and some have problem with redsn0w, bottom line to each's own.
Opps, bite my tongue, glad you edited my post.

I do not have the original Rogers sim, but do have a bell sim, which is what the phone is on now. I believe I still do not check Hactivate though, if I remember from last time. But when you say pwnagetool vs redsn0w, do you not mean pwnagetool vs sn0wbreeze?

In order to preserve my BB, I can either use pwnagetool or sn0wbreeze, correct? Then, I can activate with Ult**S***?

    Hi iAnnie,

Got the wife a used iPhone 3G with ios 4.2.1. I tried JB with Redsn0w rc8 & rc16, but it gets stuck at the end displaying 'waiting for reboot'. I have the correct ipsw, i.e., iPhone3,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw. I'm running Win7 in compatibility mode as admin and WinXP SP3. I also tried a different PC with WinXP SP3 with the same result. Are there other JB options, i.e., upgrade to 4.3.3? I want an untethered JB in order to keep it simple for her. On my 3GS iPhone, I originally used RS (tethered) and it worked fine. Later, I re-JB it with GP over-the-top to get it untethered and it's still working fine.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

iPhone 3G firmware starts iPhone 1,2. That firmware you have there is for iPhone 4.

+1. you need to get the 4.2.1 firmware for iPhone 3G.

You also can't go higher than 4.2.1. And you wouldn't use rc16. Stick with redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 for the jailbreak.

rc16 is safe to use on 4.2.1 Annie, it will actually install the latest cydia too.

I'm sure it's safe, I have just helped a lot of people who have had better success with rc8 when rc16 fails, when on 4.2.1

Only issue I have seen on 4.2.1 with rc16 is trying to select more than one box in redsnow at the same time (like cydia and ipad baseband).

Tends to crash if you do that.

There have been a couple people having issues with using rc16 on 4.2.1 when attempting to upgrade the baseband and install cydia at the same time. Even doing them individually and not at the same time didn't work out too well. Found some links on rc8 for them, it's funny though bc none of those people ever responded back to me. Guess they got it to work and forgot to come back to let me know ... or they just gave up?

Ya, I noticed rc14 and up crash if you select more than just cydia. I just prefer to use rc16 on 4.2.1 if it is just a jailbreak that is required because you dont have to update cydia after. No biggie though

Well by all means use rc16, if it fails then use rc8

Do you have a link for the 3G 4.2.1 8C148 FW?

    Thanks!

Thanks iAnnie & Simon! Once I used the correct FW (duh!) the JB appeared to work with RS rc16!

hi annie, i am current using iphone 3g on OS 3.1. The phone used to be sim lock but I had unlocked it. Can I upgrade to OS 4 and still maintained the sim unlocked ?

You'll have to create a custom firmware for 4.2.1 to upgrade and preserve the baseband so that you can still
    unlock it.
