Phone was not letting me open my apps or it will shut down after opening apps or safari.

I have done a search of programs but everytime i try to download i get a message that i cannot open program becuase its not win32 compatible or something.

You probably need to restore to custom firmware of 4.2.1 if you have a 3g or 4.3.3 if you have a 3gs.

For 3gs, you will need to download Snowbreeze 2.7.3 for PC or Pwnage tools 4.3.3 for Mac and create a custom fw.

You will need to download the stock 4.3.3 ipsw from google search iclarified firmware in order to create a cfw of 4.3.3 , use the pwned dfu from the Snowbreeze tools to get your iphone into dfu mode before restoring though latest itunes to cfw of 4.3.3

Can you open the camera app? If you have a video option then you have a 3GS. Or check
    http://thetechjournal.com/apple-warranty
Put your serial in and that will let you know

Earlier in your post when you restored your iPhone and if you got an error 1015, you could have the iPad baseband. So your only option now is to restore to custom firmware. Go ahead and create one and restore to it , let us know your progress.

Look at the back of the phone. Is the font shiny silver or dull gray? 3GS is shiny silver, gray is 3G.

Edit: just read you figured out it was a 3GS, sorry
