    hello,

ive just purchased a locked iphone on my 02 contract, ive used itunes and it said there was an update to 1.1.2 which i gladly did.

    so far, sooo good

but now i want to install and use loads of things, like ringtones, videos, themes and the changing of different icons and backgrounds etc.

i really cant do this through itunes, i was looking for different folders to move the files and i really cant do it.

i aint no techie, i struggle with itunes itself. *lol*

so can someone please tell me, in simple terms what i need to do.

    1. i dont want it to breakdown etc if a new update arrives via itunes.

edit: im using windows vista, not MACOSX.

If i were you . I would wait until next year when Apple approves SDK development; otherwise you have to hack your iPhone and it's sounds like you are not ready to do it. (It can be complicated and you can brick your precious.)

this sucks, i have all these ringtones and other things to use yet i cant

sooo disappointing, i thought it was more of a phone, than just an ipod with the ability to make a call.

apple need to sort things out by a few updates.

The iPhone has phone functions no other cell phone out there currently has, and they work quite well. Apple doesn't need to sort anything out. You need to learn how to mod, and no modifications can be made on the iPhone "in simple terms".

    hello there,

i dont mind the learning, but will i lose all my 'mods' if i update to a new version when one is released?

If its an update, no, you just need to backup your displayorder.plist so you can put it back after the update. If its a restore, everything will be wiped. But it's easy enough to set things back up again. Once the Iphone is jailbroken, you can back up your stuff just like any HD.

Are you joking or just a smartass?

Visual Voicemail, full Mail client, full Internet browser, full screen contacts image on incoming calls, and an ease of use that can't be rivaled.

so if it was just an update and not a restore, i would only have to backup "displayerorder.plist" and just put it back on after its updated?

ok, how do i do all this?

to the other guy, i have no problems with the iphone, i really like it

i just want my ringtones and themes on, thats all.

I just did an update to 1.1.2 and everything in my root folder remained. I had also moved all my applications to my root folder so all the third party apps remained as well.

Unfortunately, if you now want your iPhone jailbroken, you're going to have to downgrade back to 1.1.1 and install the OKtoPrep file, then Update back to 1.1.2

There's several guides on the subject, just hit the Guides button to your left.

my 12 month old Sony Ericsson K800i can do all that. In my opinion the iPhone lacks basic stuff that a 3 year old mobile phone has. For example....text message character count.....forwarding text messages...sending text messages to multiple recipients...video recording.

anyway, back to the topic of the thread......

You're calling Netfront a full web browser? But this is a discussion for another thread.

Using Installer.app on your iphone, download "in order...

    1. Community Sources
    2. BSD Subsystem
    3. OpenSSH

Then you can install Summerboard, which is the App responsible for changing your Themes, backgrounds, etc. The Customize.app can be used to change your Sounds.

To download new Ringtones to your iPhone, you would use SSH as a connection service. Since you said you have Vista, you'd use the program iBrickr if you don't want to use SSH, or WinSCP if you do use SSH.

You can download iBrickr from the downloads section, and read the guides for the rest.

ok, i have installed those 3 things.

where is summerboard, is it in the installer?

edit: it will only let me install summerboard (Old)

it says the other is for 1.1.1 or above.

    is this right?

ok, its also added SMBPrefs to my iphone

how do i use it, and upload my own things to use.

in SMBPrefs, i know there are 5 themes to choose, and they work.

but how do i use my own,

im glad, that so far... everything has worked for me
