I mean every post of yours is "how long until its unlocked" or "yah me too". And my guess is one month.

    I can tell you're excited.

I voted for 'never' but to clarify that, it won't 'WORK' on another provider b/c the data is too integrated into the iPhone functions. This is not like a little nokia or something where the provider is just trying to keep it on their network... your talking about iTunes updating and interaction, and the stuff with Safari. I know that people can hack just about anything, but the ability to hack it will not be the only hurdle.

I don't know, guys-- this one has me nervous. There's two main differences between the iPhone and every other cellphone out there that's going to make this really difficult.

The first is that the iPhone doesn't use a standard GSM protocol. Cingular/AT&T had to break the standard and add new bytecodes to the wireless packets on their network. Normal phones ignore them, but the iPhone needs them to function. So even if the phone were unlocked.. using it on a network that hasn't made these same protocol adjustments could prove futile.

Secondly, the iPhone wasn't made to work on anyone else's network. When Nokia or Samsung or Motorola makes a phone, they make it to work with every provider. It's much less costly if they can take the same internals and programming and plug it into a similar model to sell with a different provider. Their 'locking' lets them flip a switch and have it work on whatever network they choose. Smart corner-cutting, if you will.

But Apple doesn't need to worry about going to another provider. They don't need to worry about saving money by making an easy "provider-switch" they can control. They know that this model of the phone is legally only allowed to work with AT&T, as per their contract. And AT&T has the Apple exclusive for 5 years. Guys, this lock could be hard-coded and compiled right into the OS's wireless module. Scary stuff!

So I think it can still be broken, because all in all, there' no way they locked it at the hardware level. But it'll be at least a year before we see it D:

Tom- good to see you here. A warm welcome, my friend. And if you're getting an iPhone, then stick around, we're going to have some fun, and it'd be great to have you here with us.

Judging by how easily I can mess around with OS X on my laptop, and how fast that Apple TV got hacked, ill say about a month or so, and mabee things like visual voicemail wont work, most stuff (internet, calls, etc.) will. And iTunes updates just need access to the net to download a file really, and Safari is just a browser, dont need no specific network.
