The project for bringing you a cheap and affordable, small size, nice-looking GPS plug-in for you iPhone/iTouch has finally kicked off.

After thinking about it for a long time (considering that the idea is not new), I have decided to go for it. The end goal is a professional miniature GPS plug-in for the iPhone and iTouch with open-source navigation software for an affordable price.

I have created a blog that will track the progress of the project:

    http://iphone-gps.blogspot.com/

There are three polls on the blog. Please vote to let me know what you think.

Please use the blog and this thread to post your comments and suggestions along the way. Since this is both a software and hardware project, I have posted this in the general section.

Did you actually read the blog? Of course it has been done, but behind closed doors and it is not on the market yet. Who knows when it will come on the market and for what price and with what software. This is an project open to the community and the goal is to make it affordable and with open-source navigation software.

Thanks for the post. I assume it is real. Any idea who makes it and if it is open source?

Just a brief update on the GPS project. I have ordered some GPS modules for the first prototypes, nice and small, so it should make a nice little dongle that you can carry in your pocket. PCB board design is progressing well.

Next brief update on the GPS project (3/3/08). The modules have arrived, the antennas have arrived, and the PCB board is almost completely done.

Oranges: yes, locogps already has a pretty small module. I am trying to beat that size and put some more features in.

Next brief update on the GPS project (3/9/08). A serial connection was established by software between the iPhone and a GPS module, capturing NMEA data on the iPhone.

Keep up the good work - I'm still watching, hopefully we will find someway to get this to talk to Google Maps (or at least utilize the mapping images) so I can use it to geocache.

Next brief update on the GPS project (3/23/08). I have come up with two concept packages. Take a look and give your feedback and invite more people to visit the site. The more people that want a unit, the cheaper it will be.

It looks like LocoGPS is out of the business because Apple is not willing to support hardware devices.

They are producing a WiFi device that looks likely to be a giant failure. PmG is probably our best bet if we want slick, on-iPhone or iPod touch GPS.

The one caveat is that PmG's design doesn't look like it will support driving power through the GPS unit into the phone! Can you change that?

    Starkruzr:

The package is only a quick draw up for now (not detailed yet). Actually, the GPS module will have a mini USB connector on it that is wired up. It will support charging through that connector from e.g. your car charger or your PC (I think this is mentioned in one of the older posts or comments)

You can read more at: http://iphone-gps.blogspot.com/

Also, tell more of your friends with iPhones/iTouches and feel free to post the blog-site on other forums. If we can do a 1000pcs first production run, things will be cheaper. Most manufacturers have a 1000pcs minimum order quantity.

It looks nice! If the price wouldnt be too much and maybe you could build something around the plugin so that it wouldnt be easy to break, Im sure you would have lots of interest in this...
