I thought this would be interesting to make a thread listing the top things to do after you jailbreak your iPhone/iPod Touch.

    I'll start...

    1. Install Winterboard and get rid of the boring stock theme.

Install SBSettings, OpenSSH, and yellowsn0w. When all is working well and solid, custom SMS sounds, Notifier, Searcher, AirSharing and WildEyes. A couple more utilities like MobileTerminal and Stumbler Then a couple of ringines, music and videos w/iTunes.

And let's not forget the most important ... Winterboard, but only for a custom background

after thanking the iPhone gods that I successfully jailbroke this is my method:

    Open Cydia and upgrade all
    Reboot
Open Cydia again and upgrade anything that didnt get upgraded the first time.
    Install OpenSSH
    Install SBSettings
    reboot
    Install Winterboard
    Reboot
SSH my Winterboard themes to my iPhone
    Apply theme of my choice
    Install Five Icon Dock
    Reboot
Install any Cydia apps i use - install only a few at a time making sure to wait for the spinning progress wheel in the status bar to stop before moving to the next app or exiting Cydia - I believe this is CRUCIAL
    Reboot
Resync all my iTunes stuff - contacts, calendar, Safari bookmarks, music, movies, appstore apps.
    Install Chronus from Cydia
    Install AppBackup from Cydia
SSH my Chronus, AppBackup and various preference files back to my iPhone
    Install Categories
    Set up my Categories menus.
    Reboot
    Enjoy my very cool iPhone.

Interesting bhz1. I've noticed if I install App Store apps before Cydia apps especially using AptBackup the final respring might lock up the phone. Probably due to the quantity Cydia installs at one time.

Therefore, the last time I restored, before running AptBackup I modified the install list file (aptbackup_dpkg-packages.txt) and removed those packages that were already installed from the jailbreak. Why install something that's already installed and updated? AptBackup completed in about 1 minute and everything completed smoothly.

Then ..... on to App Store applications

Update: It's very easy to perform the comparison from a fresh jb'd and updated Cydia.
    1. dpkg -l > currentlist.txt
    2. diff currentlist.txt aptbackup_dpkg_packages.txt (returns the difference)
    3. currentlist.txt will contain the files not installed.
    4. a simple edit to currentlist.txt easily becomes the new aptbackup_dpkg-packages.txt

Note: This is not a detailed step-by-step guide. Knowledge of dpkg, diff, aptbackup, aptbackup file locations, SSH, copy/replace file, etc are required.

Funny but I have never used AptBackup. I just reinstall my Cydia apps manually mainly because it gives me full control. I just scroll down the list in Cydia and install as I come upon an app I want. Sometimes when I restore I dont always want to reinstall something or maybe I want a new app. I'm finding that more and more Im getting apps I want on the App store.

True ... to a point. But I've also noticed the AppStore list is getting vvveeerrryyyyy lllooonnng. It's difficult to find anything. Then before I download anything, the reviews are important -- BUT, not sure I can trust them, believing they're stuffed . I'm also sick and tired of all the 'Trial', 'Sponsored', 'Get the paid version -- this one is crippled' apps on App Store. In truth, I've paid for maybe 50 apps, but only 4-5 are installed. What a waste. And the updates!! Seems I update 10 AppStore apps every week!! Anyway, I like the MMI discussions and the 'outside-the-box', 'non-crippled' utility apps found on Cydia. Oh well, thanks for the ideas. Hope we've helped others.

SSH allows you to use a client such as cyberduck and go inside your iphone's file system place themes, flies, practically any-type-of-file that has an application to run for it EXAMPLE: you download the NES 3 application from cydia you open it but there are no games so you download the file on your computer( yes on your computer) and use your choice application to put it in the correct folder and then when you open up the application there it is walla!!! you have a game! hope this helps and remember google is your friend and ssreboot was hopefully a typo.
