Currently, I have an iPhone 3GS and the $30 data plan, and my parents just have regular phones and no data (because they don't need it). Today, I bought my dad an iPhone 2G 8GB for $130 (with phone, case, charger, dock, cable, and headphones -- sweet deal!). Anyway, I have some questions about him being able to use his new iPhone.

    1. Will disabling "Edge" through SBSettings ensure, 100%, that my father will not be able to use data no matter what? So no surprise charges?

    2. Can AT&T find out my father is using an iPhone instead of his old LG phone and MAKE him use the data plan? (Note I will disable data)

    3. I plan on jailbreaking, and because unlocking is very easy with redsn0w and iPhone 2G, I plan on unlocking too (even though he will continue to use AT&T). Will unlocking have any adverse effects on the iPhone 2G? (because I can remove it I think, considering we are on AT&T).

    4. Since the iPhone 2G isn't the phone my dad is supposed to be using, and because he doesn't have data, will he see any dropped calls or anything like that? Without data and the iPhone being the official phone, will he suffer from any problems on the iPhone? (The reason I ask is because my friend, who is using a 3G instead of his "real" Sony Ericcson phone", does not have data, and claims to be getting calls not going through or calls not being received. I want to know if this is true).

Lastly, I want to know if there is anything I should worry about, but I think I covered it with my questions.

Thank you very much guys, I just want to be thorough so I don't encounter any problems or "surprise" charges. Thanks a lot and please answer ALL of the questions!! :-)

1 - Disabling APN is NOT 100%, Read my post here: http://modmyi.com/forums/unlocking-a...ing-t-bug.html
The Good news is though. AT&T will allow blocking DATA. But DON'T say u have a Jailbroken/Unlocked phone - just use a white lie "I bought an unlocked phone in Hong Kong"

2 - Yes - so what. They may send a text saying "Yr plan is not consistent with yr iPhone..bla bla.." Does NOT matter.

3 - Quite OK. Just don't tell. AT&T can not see that.

4 - No. Without DataPlan will just make him not recieve emails and ability to access internet outside WiFi - so what...

    Do hope that helps

ATnT DOES know what phone you have not from its data use but the moment you put the simchip into it and turn it on. Jailbreak they won't know unless you tell them and even then they wont repo the phone LOL. I've heard stories of people using 3G phone when they use to have 2G phones the data plan changing. But more or less I dont remember any other automatic changes and if i remember correctly they HAVE to tell you they are changing their rates. At least FCC should make them tell you that. Which case I also think you can tell them you do not want data. I'm not an ATnT customer but if they give you problems you can always tell them you may not continue to be their customer and they may budge.

Well we'll all see in about 4 more days. Everyone using an iPhone without a data plan has been getting a text about how they must get a data plan by September 14th.

Alright, thanks for all the responses. I have one last question..

I called AT&T and got the data block on the LG line, and I know that they will eventually find out he has an iPhone or whatever. But what is true - They will NOT force him to get data plan or there is a chance they will?

'Cause the customer rep said they (the computers at AT&T) *might* add a data plan to my dad's line even if I have disabled data.. So what is going to happen?

I want to just use the iPhone with the line but NOT data.. I thought this was possible but I'd like a clear answer. Thanks!

Is that September 14th thing true?

Of course; why would I lie? The threat is true, but no one seems sure what will happen.

AT&T doesn’t like your Jailbroken iPhone Pwn Home Research

Read the comments, too. AT&T reps are threatening that they'll just add the charge or completely disable your phone.

ATnT isnt known for their great iPhone hassle free plans and services. Its why so many people want to JB and unlock to use on t-mobile. Even us tmobile have some minor issues getting things exactly right but they do work. The iPhone has started a data revolution and ATnT started it and they have been working on the problems since day one and even before. They just didnt expect everything to happen. Like the MMS thing and rolling out the updates to 3G and the update to that. Pricing is all wacky with the 3G and 2G iphones. We all can't guarantee what ATnT will say and or do cause things are different depending on what that rep on the phone tells you.

No, I believe they have to notify you in some way. For example, some people enabled MMS on their iPhone; the AT&T reps had to call and tell them that they were going to disable MMS because they weren't supposed to have it

But I'm still waiting on word about the whole September 14th thing; anyone hear anything?!
