i have an iphone 3g, currently locked to dome provider (not sure which) i have a sim to use once unlocked. my problem is that i am unable to jailbreak or unlock. its stuck in recovery mode saying to insert a valid sim. ive done some googling and im pretty sure you cant unlock untill you've jailbroken right? problem is i cant seem to do that. i've done it before with other iphones but tis one is being stubborn. everytime i tryto put it into dfu mode, the screen goes black but jailbreak programs are all saying 'try again' (its not in dfu) and i do not know the current firmware it is running. anyone know what to do?

Restore it to 4.2.1. When you get the emergency call screen, run redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 or rc12 on it. Whichever one you can find, those versions seem to be hard to find nowadays...

You would plug your phone into your comp, open iTunes, and hit upgrade.

Edit: for redsn0w you'll want to download a stock 4.2.1 firmware which you can get in the downloads section here on MMi

Put it into recovery mode and you can upgrade.

While the phone is on, hold the home and power button until screen goes black and when you see the apple logo let go of the power button. Keep holding home button until you see the iTunes and USB screen. Then open iTunes and it should detect it in recovery mode. Then you can upgrade.

No recovery mode and dfu aren't the same thing. Did you try the steps I gave you?

The only way to get your phone to restore is to put it into recovery mode.

If you can't manually do it, try a program called Recboot
