Help! The phone got stuck in apple logo after doing a full reset in iphone's menu. So I tried doing a full restore in itunes while in DFU mode. After itunes Installs 5.0.1 firmware it gives an error code and is now stuck in recovery mode.

Anybody have tips on how to fix this?

    - is the iphone factory unlocked or do u need to be unlocked for any carrier?

So I just tried running a custom ipsw at 4.1 by going pwned DFU first, was able to restore it to that but it restarts after 1-2 minutes. Also noticed that wifi is grayed out and modem firmware is blank. Is it safe to assume this 3gs is bricked?

    Currently getting:

    IMEI: unknown ICCID: unknown

    Is this 3gs officially dead?

Yes, once wifi & bluetooth are greyed out and IMEI is unknown, it means that the baseband chip has be destroyed, phone is bricked.

What was the first 5 digits on the serial for your phone?
