    Hey everyone.
    After years of waiting, I finally broke down & ordered a pre-owned 16GB 3GS that's been jailbroken with redsn0w for 5.0.1.
I plan on ordering a SIM card from ST & giving that a try.
I'm not a newbie when it comes to messing with phones. I started out with the Moto Razr's, then Blackberry's, now I presently have a Droid X2 that I "tinker" with. I'm sure these iPhones are an entirely different animal.
Anything I should prepare myself for?
    Thanks

Never update your phone unless theres a untethered jailbreak out. And always preserve baseband if you ever plan on unlocking the phone

    Thanks for the quick reply!
Does it need to be unlocked as well as jailbroken?

Do you mean if you need to be jailbroken to unlock?

No, I was just curious if it needs to be unlocked as well as jailbroken (which it already is).

You only need to unlock if You need to use it on a different network from whichever it was originally used on and it's not a factory unlocked handset. Also 2nd hand phones are a no no for me unless you know the original owner as half the time it's an insurance Scam (eBay at least)

Do I have an option to update or does it automatically do it when connected?
How does one preserve the baseband?

Like I stated in my OP, I'm going to try the ST thing.
I have no idea if it's factory unlocked or not. I don't know anything about iPhones & I don't know how to tell.
I appreciate the fact that you won't buy 2nd hand phones, but this is an experiment for me. I really don't have the funds to go out & spend several hundred dollars for a new, unlocked phone just to give something a try. I'm also not going to knowingly help someone with a scam, either.

You can preserve baseband with a custom firmware. You can build those using sn0wbreeze or redsn0w.

All I'm saying (to everyone) is just be careful about 2nd hand phones. Just Sick of eBay and the dishonest people on it pulling scams!
