Software Update has the spinning wheel and reads "Checking for Update..." but nothing is ever found nor does it tell me my software is up to date.

    sorry... 6.1 (10B143)
I forget which jailbreak I used

I believe it was something else... The problem was happening before yesterday. Try updating via iTunes and you computer. If you get errors, I found a solution that worked for me after having a bricked phone all day yesterday.

WOW Admins?!!? I hope you didn't think I was spamming to forums! I spent more than half a day with a bricked iPhone 5 and you deleted the ONLY solution that was able to get me back up and running!!! Please provide an explanation to why or a link to a working method here on ModMyI

This is the method I used

The hard way: editing files manually
    On Mac:

Make sure you are logged in as administrator
    Open Finder
Hold down COMMAND + SHIFT keys and press ‘G’
Enter “/private/etc/” in the field and press “Go”
Find “hosts” file in the directory
Drag the file to your desktop
    Open it in text editor
Remove the line that has gs.apple.com entirely or put a # at the beginning of it to comment it out
    Save the file
Drag it back to the /private/etc/ folder
Enter your username and password to authenticate
