I'm pretty sure they need to be .png files. Preview wont open a standard icon for mac, even when if you change the extension to .ico...

    Am I mistaken?

I could be mistaken and probably am. This works on the Mac. I think if you take a screen shot of anything on your desktop with either Command-Shift-3 (which takes a snapshot of your entire screen) or if you use Command-Shift-4 (which brings up the crosshairs so you can select whatever area you want a picture of) the OS saves that file as Picture 1.png on your desktop. Multiple screen shots will be named numerically and and count up. For example, 3 screenshots will give you 3 different files on your desktop named Picture 1.png, Picture 2.png and Picture 3.png These are valid .png files. Maybe this helps? <shrug>

I use Iconverter 0.9 to convert the folders to icons. Works a treat, even has a batch processing feature!

one great app for icons is pixadex. you can grab it at the iconfactory site.

you can dl the base version and purchas if you want to keep track of a ton of icons. basically it's drag and drop, then you can click on an icon and grab it and the mask nicely and paste into your photoshop comp. very useful
