My friend accidentally upgraded his iPod Touch 2g to firmware 4.0.2
Now anytime he hits the sleep button to shut it down (NOT power it off) and then hits the button again to wake it up all he gets is a white screen. If he holds both sleep/menu buttons long enough it will shut off and then he can turn it back on again and it will boot back again. He has to do this every time he puts it into sleep mode by hitting the sleep button. He tried to downgrade the firmware back to 3.1.3 but iTunes keeps telling him he can't because that version isn't supported. This is where he let me try to mess with it.
Tonight I was able to put it into DFU mode and then downgrade it to firmware 4.0 but I still get the white screen after hitting the sleep button and then trying to wake it back up.
He really wants it back to version 3.1.3 but no matter what I do I can't find a way to downgrade it below 4.0
Does anyone know how I can get this thing to downgrade from 4.0 to 3.1.3 and also WITHOUT getting the dreaded white screen after bringing it out of sleep mode?

put ipod in dfu mode - search dfu mode on google for instructions
open itunes and go to ipod
hold down shift and click restore
if you don't have the ipsw for 3.1.3 firmware you will to download it from iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download
select ipsw for 3.1.3 firmware and click ok
click yes to any other prompt about restoring.
it should take 20minutes or so to restore.
this will erase all data on the ipod
