looks like Verizon just released new firmware today. 4.2.9 fixes issues with vulnerability in reading malicious PDF files or something. How crazy they keep updating their firmwares every 2 months now.

I'm sure it only fixes the jailbreak exploit.... Apple has been pushing out unnecessary updates for years. cat and mouse continues

+1. Like the 4.3.4 release, it is likely to patch the jailbreakme exploit.

Yep that's what tethered means. You need to use redsn0w to boot tethered any time your device reboots or shuts off.

The answer is still the same, check the dev team's blog, twitters, and MMi's news page. If something is getting close to being done it will show up, if not then 4.2.9 isn't worth the effort and it may be a wait for iOS 5.

No one is going to make a untether for 4.2.9. It is a useless update to waste a exploit on so the next untether will definitely be sometime after 5.0 is released.

Verizon doesn't release the firmware, Apple does.

The update comes with a patch for the Jailbreakme 3.0 exploit which uses the PDF hole. As well as this, they have ported the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak kill to iOS 4.3.4 and iOS 4.2.9. Apple removed the ndrv_setspec() integeroverflow exploit used in untethered jailbreaks from iOS 4.0.1 until now. This means there probably will never be an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 or iOS 4.2.9 because by the time a new exploit is discovered (if one ever is) iOS 5 will already be at our front doors.

It is better to just stay with iOS 4.3.3 or iOS 4.2.8. The PDF Patcher 2 extension that Comex released on Cydia will secure the device just as iOS 4.3.4 or iOS 4.2.9 would. In the same, you also get to have the jailbreak (so you have your cake and eat it too).

The constant updates from Apple is becoming an annoying battle for the jailbreak community. There are the thick-skulled people that will stay on an older iOS and not be phased, but in the same there are also those kinds of people that enjoy having the latest and newest features. Apple will sometimes bring out an update with new features to lure jailbreakers into the new iOS only to find out that their jailbreak is gone afterwards. With Apple blocking Cydia's SHSH servers recently, it makes it difficult to downgrade the iOS back to a previous version. There are certainly ways around this but the process can be mind numbing and confusing to many people.

As far as these stupid little petty updates go, these updates that have no new features do not attract a lot of attention and most people are smart enough to avoid them. I won't be updating any time soon unless I know that an untethered jailbreak is re-secured in iOS 5. As that may not be for a long time, I am prepared to wait staying on iOS 4.3.3.

I sadly had to update to 4.2.9 . My phone's camara is blurry and Best Buy will replace it but i needed to update so that they dont see my jailbroken iPhone ... i dont think i can handle a tethered jailbreak at this point and since they wont be developing one then ill just wait it out . Will suck not having a jailbreak for a while
